Avalon Women's Centres

Programs

Avalon actively seeks sponsorship, individual and corporate, of the programs it provides to women in recovery from addiction and substance abuse.

The Peer Support Program is the core of Avalon. Avalon is unique in that there are no other non-residential, peer support facilities available to women in recovery from addiction in this area, and indeed in Canada. We provide resource information for social assistance, alcohol and drug counseling, treatment, detox etc. We do not provide professional counseling at Avalon - our success comes from peer support. In addition to the resources mentioned above, we also produce and distribute outreach brochures and newsletters. Our two full time staff members ensure the smooth operation of both centres.

Avalon's Child-Minding Program is a key element for women who cannot attend meetings or come to Avalon if they do not have baby-sitting. Avalon provides child-care from 12:00 to 2:00 pm each day so that their Moms may attend meetings. The child minders play with the children, feed them if necessary and generally make them feel comfortable and at home during their time without their Moms.

Our final, formal, program is for Health and Education. Avalon provides workshops and seminars which are designed for women in the 1st and 2nd stages of recovery. These workshops deal with nutrition, anger management, stress management, parenting, spirituality, and other basic life skills which are so important to women who are trying to reclaim their lives.
